I headed straight to Prosperous Place, checking the workshop door for mistletoe carefully before I went in. I started drawing out the shapes on the MDF and plywood that Bear would then cut out with Luke’s industrial size jigsaw. I wouldn’t have minded having a go at cutting them myself, but with limited time and resources, there was no margin for error or time to acquire new skills.

Rather than go and find Bear to tell him the shapes were ready to cut out, I instead left notes attached to each of the pieces and messaged him via the WhatsApp group. Not only would that method of communication keep everyone else in the loop about our progress, it would also keep the two of us on an even keel and our conversation public rather than private.

The second I sent the message, I ducked back over to the square, just in case he came to have a look while I was still there.

I managed to cleverly keep that back and forth going for the next few days, avoiding setting eyes on him completely. I went over to do the painting when I was absolutely sure he was with Freya or even better, off-site with Luke, and only when I’d completely finished my part in getting the pieces ready did I let him know there was more for him to do.

It felt like a rather foolish game of cat and mouse, but given Bear’s confession that not pulling me under the mistletoe again so soon – an action I knew I still would have been hard pushed to resist – was going to be tough, I felt it was the best one to play, for all our sakes.
